Robert Vaughn was born in New York City in 1932. His father was a radio actor, and his mother starred on stage. After four years in various small roles, Vaughn exploded into stardom with his Oscar-nominated performance in The Young Philadelphians (1959). The next year, he starred as one of the seven in the western classic The Magnificent Seven (1960).
Vaughn had several noteworthy roles in television, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964) and The Lieutenant (1963). In 1968, he starred opposite Steve McQueen in Bullitt, where he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His credits through the '70s included Julius Caesar (1970), The Towering Inferno (1974) and the television miniseries Washington: Behind Closed Doors (1977).
Throughout the second half of his career, Vaughn continued to star in multiple films and TV series, including most noteably, Superman III (1983), BASEketball (1998) and the crime series Hustle (2004). Robert Vaughn passed away from acute leukemia in 2016. His final acting credit, Gold Star (2017), was released after his death.
