Monique Angela Hicks, known professionally as Mo'Nique, is an American comedian and actress. She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of four children. She attended Morgan State University, and before her career as an actress, Mo’Nique worked as a customer service representative at a phone company. She career in comedy started at the downtown Baltimore Comedy Factory Outlet when her brother, Steve, dared her to perform at an open mic night. Mo’Nique’s international breakthrough came with her performance in the independent movie, Precious, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and over 30 other major awards for acting, including the Golden Globe and BAFTA.
