Born Melvin Kaminsky on June 28, 1926, Mel Brooks served in WWII, and afterward, worked playing the drums at nightclubs in the Catskills. Brooks eventually became a comedy performer and received work on the radio and then television. His career in film began when he wrote and directed the hit spoof comedy The Producers (1967). Brooks won an Oscar for his script and this major movie hit began a career of award-winning comedies.
Brooks' incredibly successful filmography includes such greats as Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Silent Movie (1976), High Anxiety (1977), History of the World: Part I (1981), Spaceballs (1987) and Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993).
