Carl Reiner

Carl Reiner's career spanned the American cultural explosion of the second half of the 20th Century. Born in The Bronx in 1922, Reiner made his broadway debut in 1949, and in 1950, he starred alongside Sid Caesar in the television sketch show Your Show of Shows. Reiner would go on to work with Sid Caesar in the comedy show Caesar's Hour (1954), joining a team of writers which included Mel Brooks.

Reiner would team up with Mel Brooks on The Steve Allen Plymouth Show (1951), where their hugely popular routine "The 2000 Year Old Man" first appeared. In 1961, Reiner started working on The Dick Van Dyke Show, writing 158 episodes and starring in 32 episodes during its five-year run. He also tried his hand at directing for the first time, a role he would go on to do multiple times, including in the Steve Martin comedies The Jerk (1979) and The Man with Two Brains (1983).

In 1997, Reiner directed his last film, That Old Feeling, but he continued to act in various roles, including the remake of Ocean's Eleven (2001) and its two sequels. He appeared as a voice artist in the animated series The Cleveland Show (2009) and would also receive his last writing credit in an episode for the show. Reiner also appeared in Parks and Recreation (2009), Hot in Cleveland (2010) and, for his final feature film role, provided the voice for Carl Reineroceros in Toy Story 4 (2019).

Carl Reiner died at the age of 98 from natural causes in 2020. He won 11 Primetime Emmy Awards during his lifetime, among other prestigious awards. He had three children, including director and writer Rob Reiner, whose credits include This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Carl Reiner was married to Estelle Reiner from 1943 until her death in 2008.
